HDFC Bank Showcases Five Digital Rupee Innovations to Expand CBDC Use Among Consumers and Corporates

Mumbai : HDFC Bank has unveiled five new use cases for India’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), the Digital Rupee, aimed at expanding its adoption across consumer payments and corporate transactions.
The initiatives, showcased at an industry forum last week, focus on making the Digital Rupee more practical for everyday payments while leveraging features such as programmability, purpose-bound spending, transparency and enhanced compliance.
Among the key innovations is the proposed use of Digital Rupee for credit card reward redemption. Customers will be able to convert their eligible reward points into Digital Rupee vouchers that can be used across categories including dining, fuel, apparel and electronics. The system is designed to allow customers to utilise the value of their rewards down to the last paise.
HDFC Bank is also exploring Digital Rupee-based gift vouchers for customer promotional campaigns. Under the proposed system, qualifying customers could automatically receive Digital Rupee vouchers in their HDFC Bank Digital Rupee wallets. The vouchers would be usable by scanning UPI QR codes at participating merchants, giving customers greater flexibility in how they spend promotional benefits.
For businesses, the bank is developing a Digital Rupee corporate portal for employee allowances and reimbursements. Organisations will be able to disburse meal, fuel and travel allowances through the bank's Corporate NetBanking platform. Programmable payments would enable companies to restrict the use of funds to designated purposes, potentially improving compliance and reducing reconciliation work for finance teams.
The bank also plans to make its Digital Rupee wallets available through BHIM, allowing customers to access CBDC payments through a familiar UPI-style interface. The integration is expected to improve the discoverability of Digital Rupee and broaden its usability across merchant transactions.
Another key development is offline Digital Rupee payments for in-flight purchases. HDFC Bank said customers will soon be able to use their phones with the bank's point-of-sale devices onboard flights to pay for food, beverages and seat upgrades, even when internet connectivity is unavailable.
“Digital Rupee combines the trust of sovereign money with programmability, transparency and stronger controls,” said Ashish Parthasarathy, Group Head, Branch Banking, Payments, Treasury, Liability Products, Marketing, Virtual Channels and Infrastructure, HDFC Bank. He said the initiatives are aimed at addressing emerging requirements around purpose-bound payments, compliance and auditability across retail and wholesale markets.
Rajanish Prabhu, Senior EVP, HDFC Bank, said the next phase of Digital Rupee adoption would depend on scale and everyday utility. According to him, integrating CBDC into familiar payment journeys such as UPI, merchant transactions, rewards, employee benefits and offline payments could make the technology more accessible to customers and businesses.
The bank's latest initiatives highlight an effort to expand the Digital Rupee beyond a conventional digital payment instrument by using its programmable features for specific consumer and corporate applications. The developments also demonstrate how CBDC could complement existing account-based digital payment systems by offering additional controls and purpose-specific functionality.
