CBI Coordinates Extradition of Wanted Fugitive Amritpal Singh from Moldova

Accused in double murder, Arms Act and NDPS Act cases, brought back to India on September 12

New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Punjab Police, has successfully facilitated the extradition of Interpol Red Notice subject Amritpal Singh alias Gurpal Singh from Moldova to India.

The wanted fugitive was brought back to India on September 12, 2026, by a four-member team of the Punjab Police, which had travelled to Chisinau, Moldova, to take custody of the accused. The team, along with Amritpal Singh, arrived in Delhi on Saturday.

Amritpal Singh is wanted in connection with several serious criminal cases registered in Punjab. His alleged criminal activities include double murder involving the use of firearms, as well as offences under the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

His criminal antecedents also include cases related to forgery and cheating, use of forged documents and violations of the Passport Act.

Red Notice led to arrest in Moldova

At the request of the Punjab Police, the CBI had obtained the publication of an Interpol Red Notice against Amritpal Singh through Interpol channels.

Following the issuance of the Red Notice, the fugitive was subsequently geo-located and arrested by the authorities in Moldova. An extradition request was thereafter submitted to the Moldovan authorities by the Indian side.

After completion of the prescribed legal process, the Moldovan authorities granted the extradition of Amritpal Singh to India, paving the way for his return to face the criminal proceedings pending against him in Punjab.

CBI coordinates international action through Interpol

The CBI functions as India's National Central Bureau (NCB) for Interpol and coordinates with law-enforcement agencies across the country for securing international assistance through Interpol channels.

The agency also facilitates such coordination through BHARATPOL, India's platform for streamlined international police cooperation.

According to the CBI, more than 175 wanted criminals have been successfully brought back to India in recent years through coordinated efforts involving Interpol channels.

The extradition of Amritpal Singh marks another instance of coordinated action by Indian law-enforcement agencies to trace and bring back fugitives wanted in serious criminal cases from foreign jurisdictions.
